The two slowly fall in love but their time together is short lived as Gus dies near the end of the movie because of his cancer treatment. Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) is a sixteen-year-old teenager that has been diagnosed with Stage IV Thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs which are now filled up with tumors. Due to this diagnosis, Hazel has been forced to stop her cancer radiation treatment after having a heart attack. After meeting Gus, she meets his favorite author Peter Van Houten. She is forced to move in with his favorite author after having a lung surgery. Hazel falls in love with Gus but soon learns that he is not long for this world because of the cancer treatments. Hazel's parents try everything they can to make her happy one last time before she dies, however she stops them by telling them that she doesn't need any of their attempts to make her happy.
